Margie Lariviere, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary

Margie Lariviere joined State Fund as General Counsel and Corporate Secretary in July 2015. Margie oversees State Fund’s Corporate Legal team which handles litigation, transactional work, employment matters, and regulatory compliance. As corporate secretary, Margie advises State Fund’s Board of Directors and its Committees, including best practices and policies on corporate governance. From July 1, 2019 to September 15, 2022, Margie also assumed the role of Chief of Internal Affairs which oversees the Internal Audit Department, the Special Investigations Unit and the Governance, Compliance, and Privacy team. Margie is a member of the company’s executive leadership team.

Before joining State Fund, Margie was a partner in the Litigation and Insurance group at Gordon & Rees, LLP where she advised clients on complex insurance issues and was trial counsel on life, health, and disability litigation. She chaired the San Francisco office’s Professional Development Committee and mentoring program.  Prior to joining Gordon & Rees, Margie worked for AAA Insurance Exchange, in both a claims Executive role and as a Corporate Lawyer in the Legal and Regulatory Affairs division. Units reporting to Margie in her executive role included SIU, litigation, analytics, regulatory affairs, HO vendor management and large loss.  Margie began her career at Kelly & Herlihy, LLP in San Francisco where she oversaw an active litigation practice and successfully tried a number of cases to verdict in state and federal court.

Margie has a passion for law and has taught at Hastings College of Law since 1999, most recently teaching Insurance Law and prior to that a seminar on Civil Procedure Before Trial. For several years she served as a member for the State Bar’s Committee on Group Insurance Programs where she was a frequent presenter on insurance topics. Margie has been a Judge Pro Tem for San Francisco Superior Court, handling traffic court matters and civil case settlement conferences.

Margie received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from U.C. Berkeley, and a Juris Doctor from U.C. Hastings, College of Law. She also earned the Leadership Fellow designation from the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD).
