State Fund CEO Vern Steiner and several other leaders recently visited the Tiburcio Vasquez Health Center (TVHC) in San Leandro in support of a new colorectal cancer screening project. The effort resulted from a partnership between State Fund and the American Cancer Society (ACS).
Angela Harder, State Fund’s Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, worked with ACS to maximize the impact of our strategic alliance with ACS to directly benefit as many people as possible.
Together, they created the “Adopt-A- Clinic” project, with the goal of addressing an unmet cancer treatment need in our communities.
State Fund and ACS chose the Tiburcio Vasquez Health Centers in Alameda County as the recipient of our support. TVHC has nine health centers including primary care, pediatrics, school-based health centers, behavioral health, and dentistry in the communities of Hayward, San Leandro, and Union City.
The clinic’s largely Latino patient population has relatively low rates of colorectal cancer screenings. Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths for both men and women in the United States with 1 in 20 people diagnosed annually. The good news is that 60 percent of colorectal cancer deaths can be prevented through early screening.
“I really enjoyed visiting TVHC—I saw the same sense of purpose and passion in their employees as I see in many of State Fund’s,” said Steiner.
