Free Seminar on Gas and Electric Lines Safety at State Fund, Bakersfield, April 3

March 19, 2008

BAKERSFIELD/SAN FRANCISCO - State Compensation Insurance Fund is hosting a seminar entitled “Contractor Beware: Safety Around Overhead and Underground Gas and Electric Lines” as part of State Fund’s Employer Education Series.Offered at no charge, with sessions for construction and agriculture, the one-hour morning presentation is scheduled for Thursday, April 3, at State Fund’s District Office in Bakersfield, Calif.

Featured speaker Charles Basham, Manager of Public Safety at Southern California Edison, will discuss safe work practices around utilities and ways to help others ensure jobsite safety. Each year contractors and other employees in the construction and agriculture industries are injured or killed in the workplace due to contact with overhead and underground utilities, specifically natural gas and/or electric lines. Working safely around these utilities requires more than just calling to have them located and marked, or knowing where they are situated in a work area. Ensuring sufficient safeguards includes establishing and following work practices on the jobsite that promote a safe, healthy environment for the employees and the public.

This important presentation has the support of a coalition of the following public utility companies:

  • Pacific Gas & Electric
  • Southern California Edison
  • City of Anaheim
  • Sacramento Municipal Utility District
  • California Public Utilities Commission–Utilities Safety & Reliability Branch
  • San Diego Gas and Electric
  • Southern California Gas Company
  • IID Energy, a division of the Imperial Irrigation District.

Held in State Fund’s Bakersfield District Office at 9801 Camino Media, Bakersfield, the session takes place from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., with on-site registration starting at 7:00 a.m. This event includes refreshments, and free parking is available.

Seating is limited, so State Fund encourages early registration. Individuals must register separately either online, or by e-mail (jagunderson@scif.com), phone (call Jackie Gunderson at 661-664-4021), or fax (Attention: Jackie Gunderson 661-664-4100).

The Bakersfield seminar is part of a series of educational programs State Fund is holding throughout the state to help employers create safe workplaces. State Fund has the largest safety and health services program among California workers’ compensation insurance carriers.
