Free Pesticide Safety Workshop for Trainers at State Fund, Oxnard, April 16

March 24, 2008

OXNARD/SAN FRANCISCO - State Compensation Insurance Fund is presenting a “Train the Trainer” Pesticide Safety Workshop as part of State Fund’s Employer Education Series. Offered at no charge to State Fund policyholders and invited guests, this presentation is in Spanish only. The four-hour morning session takes place on Wednesday, April 16, at State Fund’s District Office in Oxnard, Calif., with attendance encouraged for the following participants:

  • Agricultural owners
  • Employers
  • Managers
  • Supervisors
  • Labor contractors
  • Others interested in improving their operation’s pesticide safety program.

The Environmental Protection Agency revised the Worker Protection Standard (WPS) for agricultural pesticides in August 1992. This WPS requires agricultural workers to receive basic pesticide safety information before they enter a treated area, and to receive complete WPS safety training within five (5) days of initial employment. An agricultural worker is anyone who does tasks such as harvesting, weeding, or watering related to the production of agricultural plants or farms, forests, nurseries, and green houses.

Featured speaker Pedro Acero is a State Fund loss control consultant with more than 20 years of safety experience. His credentials include certification by the Department of Pesticide Regulation (California Environmental Protection Agency) in the “Train the Trainers (T3) Program for Pesticide Handlers and Fieldworkers.” After his presentation, attendees will:

  • Understand the requirements for pesticide safety training.
  • Know how to protect employees from pesticide hazards in the workplace.
  • Know how to conduct the WPS training.
  • Receive a certificate of attendance, which will add the recipient to the California Department of Pesticide Regulation’s list of qualified instructors.

The event location is State Fund’s Oxnard District Office, 2nd Floor Conference Room, at 2901 N. Ventura Road, Oxnard. The session takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with on-site registration starting at 8:00 a.m. This workshop includes a complimentary continental breakfast and snacks. Free parking is available.

Seating is limited, so State Fund encourages early registration. Individuals must register separately either online, or by e-mail (apaldana@scif.com), phone (call Alberto Aldana at 805-988-5270, or Pedro Acero at 805-988-5248), or fax (Attention: Alberto Aldana 805-988-5201).

The Oxnard seminar is part of a series of educational programs State Fund is holding throughout the state to help employers create safe workplaces. State Fund has the largest safety and health services program among California workers’ compensation insurance carriers.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Headquartered in San Francisco, State Compensation Insurance Fund is California’s largest provider of workers’ compensation insurance with approximately 200,000 policyholders. Established by the Legislature in 1914, State Fund is a nonprofit, self-supporting, fairly competitive public enterprise that serves a dual role as both a market of choice and the safety net for California employers seeking workers’ compensation insurance.
