State Fund Hosts Free Fleet Safety Seminar

April 15, 2008

SACRAMENTO/SAN FRANCISCO -- State Compensation Insurance Fund, in partnership with California Highway Patrol, and Cal/OSHA Consultation Service, is presenting a safety seminar entitled ‘Got Drivers’ on April 22 in Sacramento. The seminar - free of charge - is designed for owners, managers, supervisors, safety program leaders, and fleet safety program administrators who employ drivers as part their business operation.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of work-related injuries. Every 12 minutes someone dies in a motor vehicle crash, every 10 seconds an injury occurs, and every 5 seconds a crash occurs.

The financial impact is also substantial. Employers bear the cost for many of these incidents when they occur during the workday while conducting business in a company car. These costs include workers’ compensation, auto, and employer liability insurance. In fact, motor vehicle crashes cost employers $60 billion annually in medical care, legal expenses, property damage, and lost productivity.

The fleet safety presentation will be conducted by California Highway Patrol (CHP) staff knowledgeable in vehicle regulations and enforcements, as well as general rules-of-the-road mandates. Interactive modules will be used in order to have attendees create individualized fleet safety programs.

The seminar concludes with a representative from Cal/OSHA Consultation Service who will show attendees how to implement fleet safety in their Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP). Topics addressed during this session include:

  • A company’s safety culture
  • Employee safety
  • Education
  • Awareness
  • Safe operation of vehicles

The seminar runs from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and is followed by a second presentation from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., will be held on April 22 at State Fund’s Sacramento District Office located at 2275 Gateway Oaks Drive, Sacramento. Registration and continental breakfast for the first session starts at 7:30 a.m.  Registration and complimentary snack for the second session begins at 12:30. Parking is free. To register by phone please contact Angel Martinez at (916) 924-6812 or fax attn. Angel at (916) 567-4800 or email at amartinex1@scif.com, or register online.
